Energy giant SSE ends cold calling tactics

The second piece of good news this month from domestic and business energy supplier, SSE, is that they are to stop cold calling sales tactics. The move will also put an end to unsolicited calls from other companies in the SSE group: Southern Electric, Scottish Hydro and Swalec.

Group managing director for retail at SSE, Will Morris, has said: “Cold calling is not something that a company like SSE – committed to providing an excellent customer experience – should be doing any longer.”

Mr Morris also added: “This decision to end unsolicited calls is part of becoming that company and demonstrates that we are dedicated to delivering what customers want.”

SSE will relocate their cold calling employees to other areas of the company

The move to stop cold calling will mean the unemployment of 70 posts in the Thatcham office and around 30 employees in Cardiff, the company has promised to redeploy the staff elsewhere in the company “wherever possible”. SSE also stopped doorstep selling around two years ago after a court found that their tactics were “misleading”, SSE responded by saying that commission-based doorstep selling was “no longer an effective way” to make sales.

Managing Director of Business Energy Price Comparison website, Energy Advice Line and creator of the ‘Say No to Cold Calling’ campaign, Julian Morgan is very pleased to hear of the news:

“It is very reassuring to learn that SSE have decided to end cold calling, we often hear from our customers that they will purposely avoid companies that use these tactics as they clearly have very little regard for customer, so SSE have made some business energy customers very happy. We are hoping that other energy suppliers will see this and follow suit”.

Say 'No' to cold calling on business energy

Unfortunately, business electricity and business gas customers in the UK are bombarded with unsolicited cold calls on a daily basis.

This unscrupulous approach does not offer the business energy customer an impartial view on the market and the price offered is more often 20-30% above the current retail price for electricity or gas.

At Energy Advice Line we strongly advise customers to not accept these offers and follow our simple steps to ensure that they are not locked into an uncompetitive contract.
