Reduce the price you pay for your Business Gas

Business gas meters consume in the region of 8,125 TWh’s annually which accounts for the significant proportion of energy consumed by businesses in the UK.

Gas meters however only account for approximately 24% of the volume of meters if we look at the mix of business electricity and gas meters in the UK.

It has never been more important to reduce the amount you pay for your business gas. Energy Advice Line can help.

We are one of the UK’s leading price comparison and switching service. Established in 2006 we challenged the status quo and made price comparison and switching for businesses as transparent as doing the same for household energy.

We have continued to help 1000’s of businesses save money on their gas bills every year by comparing prices with the UK’s leading energy suppliers. We only offer business customers the best rate first time as our business model dictates that we try and save customers as much money as possible.

A supplier’s business model dictates that they need to earn as much money as possible from their customers so there is a very strong likelihood that they will not offer the best gas or electricity rate to you first time. If they did this, the simple fact is that they would reduce their profit margin significantly. Although a supplier directly will often adopt a price match approach so it looks like they are being fair to their customers, we strongly believe that is not a very transparent way of approaching a loyal customer on renewal.

The most transparent approach should be a best price first time policy as customers know where they stand, they can compare the market and make a quick decision rather than being told that if their customer can get a better price, they “might” be able to match it.

A supplier is almost incentivizing its customer to go and do the work they should be doing and over complicating the renewal process for their customer by going with the price match approach. In business, time is money and a business owner or key decision maker needs to weigh up the time that they spend by going through the price match “challenge” with their current supplier. It can take a lot of time and the saving in the end is eroded when you take this into account – especially in business as we all know that you cannot get time back.

The Energy Advice Line constantly challenge its supplier partners for their best price so they can pass this onto their customer every time. We are paid a referral commission from the supplier partner that we place the customer with – this is usually in the region of £100.00 – £150.00 per referral. However, this amount depends a lot on what the supplier partner pays and the length of the contract.

Will a business customer get a better price going to a supplier directly?

The basic answer to this is a supplier might be able to reduce their offer to you if they believe that they are at risk of losing you as their customer. However, they will not offer this price to you first time and will require you to shop the market and go back with proof of a more competitive price.

You can do this but I think we have proved that this can often count against you in terms of time and effort. If you make a note of your time and put a cost against it then add in the time that you have lost that could have been utilized to growing your business, the price match approach adopted by some suppliers is actually not treating you with an awful lot of respect.

I have just moved into a new business premises – what do I need to do?

It can take between 15 and 45 days to swap energy supplier (depending on the supplier you choose) so it is important that a business addresses how much it is paying for its utilities as soon as they possibly can.

I am sure that you will have a list a mile long of things you need to do when moving in but it is so important to address how much you pay for your critical costs before they start to erode the overall business profit margin.

Let’s take a new restaurant start up as an example. A supplier will charge you what are called deemed rates when you move into the premises. These tend to be 30% higher than a fixed term contract prices from an online price comparison site – so if we take a spend of £800.00 for gas and electricity per month, the deemed rate at 30% extra would be an extra £342.00 every month until the point the situation is addressed and you agree to a fixed term agreement.

Most suppliers bill you every 3 months, so you could get a nasty surprise 3 months into running your business when margins are tighter than ever and you are under pressure trying to increase your customer base. The extra £1,026.00 could have been put too much better use than paying deemed contract rate charges to your energy supplier!

It only takes a matter of minutes to compare the market, signup and get the switch underway to your new energy supplier. If we take the above restaurant start up as an example, a few minutes could save you over £1,000.00.

Please also be warned however that you will be called by unsolicited cold callers with a very short period of time of moving in to your new premises. The cold callers will know that you are paying deemed rates and will usually offer you a slightly better rate which might save you 4-5%. This on the face of it seems like a reasonable offer as they are making you a saving – however, the most important thing to remember is that they are saving you 4-5% on your deemed rates which can be 30% more expensive than fixed term rates with an online price comparison service. So you will now be paying 25% more than you should be!

Although accepting the price from the unsolicited cold caller might appear to be the easiest option as they are on the phone, we would really advise you to get the rate that is being offered and quickly go online to as we can assure you will find a much cheaper rate for your business.

More importantly, you were in control of the entire process and assured that the correct decision has been made for your businesses trading future.

Say 'No' to cold calling on business energy

Unfortunately, business electricity and business gas customers in the UK are bombarded with unsolicited cold calls on a daily basis.

This unscrupulous approach does not offer the business energy customer an impartial view on the market and the price offered is more often 20-30% above the current retail price for electricity or gas.

At Energy Advice Line we strongly advise customers to not accept these offers and follow our simple steps to ensure that they are not locked into an uncompetitive contract.

Join our cold calling campaign here, and spread the word to say 'no' to cold calling on business energy!
