Lights out for business energy customers?

New rules on business energy consumption will mean the end of all-night illuminated displays, the Environment Agency claims.

The Carbon Reduction Scheme, which comes into force in April, requires businesses to slash energy consumption or be hit by large fines – and turning out the lights at night is certainly one way I can think of to ensure you don’t get caught out.

It’s not all bad news; there’s a distinct carrot and stick approach to the Environment Agency’s scheme, with financial rewards for the businesses that do best in cutting business energy consumption.

This scheme is geared up for big businesses, those using more than 6,000 MWh of electricity. But I think there are valuable tips we can all adopt to ensure that our business’s energy consumption – and thus costs – are kept down.

Simple things such as turning off lights and equipment at night and in areas not in use, not placing desks directly in front of radiators (anything blocking a radiator reduces its efficiency) and keeping a close eye on your business energy consumption – so you pay for what you actually use, not what your energy company thinks you’ll use – are easy habits to get into and will save you money.

Keep an eye on your contract renewal dates for business electricity and business gas, too, and be sure to use a comparison service such as Energy Advice Line when you want to change your business energy contracts.
